Introducing….The Ratchet Scholar®

The Ratchet Scholar is now a registered USPTO trademark! I launched this project back in 2017/2018 while in my doctoral program at Howard University. I needed a creative outlet to express myself because the weight of non-stop readings, assignments, and teaching was staggering. It felt great to not only launch something that I cared about, but also to connect with other people who instinctively got “it.” The duality of embracing Black popular culture within a traditionally whitewashed space was liberating.

As my research and teaching demands increased, I had to step away from The Ratchet Scholar to focus on the end goal— graduation. Then, as life would have it, the pandemic struck and I found myself trying to catch my breath while navigating life, career, and personal transitions.
